Types of Attic Insulation
Spray foam insulation helps to limit air infiltration between the living spaces of your home and the attic. When properly installed, attic insulation along with a comprehensive air sealing system will keep warm indoor air from escaping in the winter and hot indoor air from entering in the summer, reducing energy costs.
There are several different types of attic insulation available. Your choice depends on a few factors, including your budget, the R-value you hope to achieve and the type of home you have.
Signs Your Attic Insulation Needs an Upgrade
Fiberglass batt insulation is one of the most common forms of attic insulation, and is also the most affordable. It’s available in various R-values and can be installed between joists, walls or knee walls.
Cellulose is another common form of attic insulation. Made from recycled newspaper and boric acid, cellulose is fire retardant and insect repellent. When dense packed, it fills the spaces between attic floor joists and in wall cavities to reduce air infiltration. It can be installed between the joists of finished attic rooms, (A) between the studs and rafters of exterior walls, and (2A) in the space between the trusses of dormers and roof edges.
Loose-fill insulation, or blown in insulation, is similar to fiberglass batt insulation but is blown into the attic using a machine designed for this purpose. This machine uses bags of loose cellulose, fiberglass or rockwool to insulate your attic.
